About
I’m Rebecca, 27, and I run Girdle of Venus from my living room in Leicestershire.
I make hand embroidered textile pieces, mostly Sacred Hearts, using velvet, beads and metallic thread. A lot of my work is inspired by medieval art, religious imagery and older symbolic objects.
Everything is made slowly, by hand, in one place. No production line, no repeats.
The Details
Each piece starts as a blank piece of fabric and is built up stitch by stitch. Depending on the design, it can take anywhere from a few hours to over 20.
I use materials like velvet, glass beads and metallic thread to create small, detailed objects that sit somewhere between decoration and textile art.
Some are made to be worn or carried, others to hang or keep.
Thank you for supporting a small, living-room-based studio. It means the world that these pieces are finding homes beyond my four walls.
One of One
Every piece is a one-of-one. I don’t remake designs, so once something is sold, it’s gone.
That’s a big part of the work for me. Each piece is its own thing, rather than part of a batch.
The "Why?"
I’m interested in how older objects were made to be kept - things like devotional items, love tokens or small personal objects with meaning attached to them.
This is my way of working with that idea, but in a contemporary way.
